When a mother gives birth a new child, we all want the baby to be delivered without any birth injury or complications. We also want the mother to be healthy. Unfortunately, the United States ranks among the worst for maternal morbidity among developed countries. That is a scary fact, and new mothers and medical professionals should do everything they can to assure the health and safety of not only babies, but mom’s well being too.
It has been statistically shown that proper prenatal care decreases the chance of birth injury to the infant and decreases the chance of maternal death. While there is less research and statistics on the effects of post-partum care, it is obvious that proper care for newly delivered mothers will increase their chances of a speedy recovery and safer future pregnancies.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 50,000 of those women experience life threatening or physically damaging complications immediately before, during, and after childbirth.
- These complications can not only be physical injuries, but also can affect the mother’s financial stability. These complications are not as rare as is commonly perceived. Dangerous complications to mother and baby occur in over 1% of live births.
Some of these complications can not only affect the health of the mother, but future generations. Moms should be happy and healthy to raise happy and healthy infants. Sometimes complications can arise that result in the mom not being able to birth more children.
Complications seemed to have risen in the United States for women giving birth. This has results in turn, with an increase of women being intubated before and after being delivered of children and an over 60% increase in emergency hysterectomies over the last 30 years.
Part of what is causing serious complication in recently delivered mothers is the care, or lack thereof, provided after a pregnancy with serious or life-threatening complications. Sometimes when emergency procedures are done, the lack of follow up care can further exasperate the medical issue, or delay the physical healing process.
- Moms should take care of their health, go to follow up appointments, and be sure to listen to their bodies and instincts if something may be wrong.
- Many new moms report that medical professionals don’t always take their self-reported symptoms seriously.
Infants and children thrive when they have a healthy parent to raise them. Women should take care of their own health needs after giving birth, and we need medical professionals to do everything they can for these women.
