Why Most Motorcycle Crashes Happen Close to Home
You know these roads. You’ve ridden them dozens of times—the familiar route to the gas station, the shortcut through your neighborhood, the stretch you’ve taken so many times you barely think about it. That sense of familiarity can be one of the most dangerous things on a motorcycle.
More than half of all fatal motorcycle crashes occur within 10 miles of the rider’s home. More than a third happen within five miles. The roads that feel safest are often where riders are most at risk—and there are concrete reasons why.
Why Familiar Roads Are Dangerous
Familiarity breeds complacency, and local streets have hazards that catch even experienced riders off guard. When a crash happens close to home, it’s often because of one or more of the following:
- Reduced attention on known routes. Riders who know a stretch of road tend to take corners faster, check mirrors less often, and let their guard drop because the road feels predictable.
- Intersection danger. Over 65% of motorcycle crashes occur in urban and suburban settings, and roughly 37% happen at intersections—exactly the kind of roads that surround most riders’ homes.
- Drivers who aren’t looking. Cars making left turns, pulling out of driveways, or drifting into lanes without checking are among the leading causes of fatal motorcycle collisions.
How to Stay Safe Close to Home
Knowing the risk is the first step. Adjusting how you ride is the second. A few habits that can make a real difference:
- Ride every route like it’s new. Resist the autopilot that kicks in on familiar roads. Stay deliberate about scanning intersections, checking mirrors, and watching for turning vehicles.
- Assume you’re invisible. Many close-to-home crashes happen because a driver simply didn’t see the rider coming. Ride as though every driver around you doesn’t know you’re there—because many don’t.
- Wear your gear every time, even on short trips. Most crashes don’t announce themselves in advance.
Misny Backs Motorcyclists
In 2023, 60% of motorcyclist deaths involved another vehicle. Motorcycles make up just 3% of registered vehicles but accounted for more than 15% of all traffic fatalities that year. When these crashes happen, a motorcycle almost always loses.
