According to the Center for Disease Control, motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death of American teen drivers. So far in 2017, there have been 72 teen traffic deaths in the State of Ohio alone.
Young people aged 15 to 19 account for 7% of the US population, but account for 11% of the total cost of all motor vehicle accidents. That amounts to upwards of $10 billion dollars. Drivers aged 16 to 19 are four times more likely than any other age group of drivers to crash. Teenagers also account for about 12% of all fatal car crashes
June and July are among the deadliest months for teenage drivers. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are among the most dangerous days for teenage drivers regardless of the month. The most frequent time for teenage motor vehicle deaths are between 9 pm and midnight.
Approximately 65% of teenage car crash victims are males. Males are also more likely to have higher blood alcohol content that females when there is a motor vehicle accident involving alcohol as a factor.
Among teenage passengers injured or killed in a car accident, it is more likely that the driver of the vehicle is also a teenager. The more teenagers in a single automobile, the higher the chance for that vehicle to be involved in a motor vehicle accident.
