PEDESTRIAN SAFETY – NOT MOVING OVER FOR STOPPED VEHICLES
You get a call late at night or a knock on your door from a highway patrol officer. Your loved one was killed or seriously injured by a passing car or truck while they were changing a tire on the side of the road. All that remain are cherished memories.
During the first two months of 2019, 140 people have died on Ohio roadways. Data released by the Ohio State Patrol show that between 2013 and 2017 there were 58 crashes on state roads due to a failure to obey Ohio’s Move Over law which requires all drivers to slow down or move over one lane when they see flashing lights on the side of the interstate. Those 58 crashes resulted in 58 people injured and 2 people killed. These statistics don’t even include the close calls, where a pedestrian was within seconds of death or serious injury.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration most pedestrian fatalities occurred in the dark, while fewer fatalities occurred at intersections than other parts of the road.
There are safety tips that pedestrians and drivers can take to help each other on Ohio’s roads.
Tips for Drivers:
- Drive at or below the speed limit.
- Follow traffic rules.
- Be on the lookout at all times for pedestrians.
Tips for Pedestrians:
- Follow traffic signs and devices.
- Cross only at crosswalks.
- Use sidewalks if available.
- Pay attention to traffic.
- When walking on the road, wear reflective clothing and use a flashlight at night to alert drivers that you are nearby.
After the initial shock wears off anguish and anger settle in. This accident could have been avoided if the driver had just been more careful. The driver’s negligence and reckless failure to exercise reasonable care has taken the life of your loved one, ruined your life and has ruined the driver’s life as well. In the blink of an eye your loved one is gone. How will you and your remaining family members be able to move forward emotionally and financially?
