In the state of Ohio, it is estimated that an average of 400 people die in alcohol related car accidents each year.
A new program, known as the Ohio Track Back Program, has begun to investigate the history surrounding alcohol-related accident fatalities. While this initiative is being scrutinized by some, I believe this is long overdue!
The Track Back Program will review any accident, serious injury or fatality that resulted from alcohol consumption and will be handled by a special investigator on a case-by-case basis. The investigation will assess underage drinking, over-serving and other bar violations, and more.
The goal is to hold everyone who contributed to the alcohol over consumption accountable for the accident… not just a driver. Â This will deter people from serving alcohol to minors, limit the number of drinks served at parties, bars and restaurants and encourage others to take keys from the impaired driver.
I have worked with many, many families devastated by tragedy resulting from alcohol and negligent behavior; I am thrilled beyond words about the Ohio Track Back Program and the very real impact this will have to reduce alcohol related incidents in the years to come.
The first case to hit the headlines
The first individuals to be charged since the Ohio Track Back Program came to fruition occurred in August, 2015. The case involved a deadly car accident in which an 18 year old driver was provided alcohol and subsequently got behind the wheel, killing an innocent woman. Three individuals were charged with manslaughter because they supplied the alcohol, and the driver is facing aggravated vehicular homicide and driving under the influence.
By holding all four individuals negligent and accountable for the tragic car accident, it sets a standard of responsibility and will likely contribute to a decline in alcohol related injuries and fatalities. Â From the people selling the alcohol, to the people serving the alcohol, to the people consuming the alcohol… look out, you will be held responsible.
