If you or anyone in your family received a cancer diagnosis after using Roundup weed killer, I know that you have probably been reading news stories about lawsuits against Bayer, the company that owns Roundup. According to a recent article in The New York Times, Bayer has agreed to a $10 billion settlement over cancer lawsuits related to Roundup use.
It is not too late to seek compensation from Bayer if you were diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after using this dangerous product. Let me tell you more about the settlement, and let me encourage you to get in touch with me if you have questions about filing a Roundup weed killer claim.
Bayer is Responsible for Monsanto Product
About two years ago, Bayer—a company that the article describes as a “giant German chemical and pharmaceutical maker—acquired Monsanto, the original maker of Roundup weed killer. When Bayer acquired Monsanto, it knew it was also getting Roundup.
In the time that Bayer has owned Roundup, thousands of patients have filed claims and have joined class-action lawsuits against Bayer, alleging that Roundup use caused cancer. Roundup contains an ingredient called glyphosate, which the World Health Organization (WHO) identified in 2015 as an herbicide that is “probably carcinogenic to humans.”
Many of the lawsuits came from “homeowners and groundskeepers” who used the product and were later diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Although studies have varied when it comes to clearly identifying the toxicity of Roundup weed killer and the link between glyphosate and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, the recent Bayer settlement is good news for current and future plaintiffs.
$10 Billion Settlement Includes Money for Future Claims
The recently settled lawsuit covers approximately 95,000 individual cases. It does not include about 30,000 plaintiffs who did not agree to join this settlement. In addition to the money that will compensate parties in those 95,000 cases, $1.25 billion of the settlement has been set aside “for potential future claims from Roundup customers who may develop the form of cancer known as non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma,” according to the article.
