The Importance of Proper Insurance Coverage
Many of my clients and followers have heard me talk at length about umbrella coverage and the importance of supplementing your standard insurance policy – but there is another very important type of insurance that you should confirm your policy includes! As an attorney, a large part of my job is to be your advocate in your time of need, and ultimately to get you justice. However, it also offers me unique insights into specific situations that many would have no idea how to properly prepare for, or the true importance of covering every base.
Many of my clients assume that because driving uninsured is illegal, when an accident happens insurance will step in and cover the expenses. Unfortunately this is simply not always the case. In my years of experience, I have seen everything from uninsured and under-insured drivers, individuals driving someone else’s vehicle in which both parties are uninsured, individuals driving with minimum coverage, the list is endless.
In one specific case, my client was riding in a vehicle that was struck by a drunk driver. In this situation, the drunk driver was driving another individuals car – Neither he nor the vehicle owner had insurance. The car that was hit, was carrying my client – unbelievably neither the operator or the owner of the vehicle had insurance.
Uninsured or Underinsured Motorists
The problem lies in that when an accident occurs, and you are injured, if the negligent party does not have coverage or adequate coverage, there can be issues regarding who will and can pay the related expenses. Ohio law requires liability coverage, but the amount is not going to go as far as to provide reparative and expense coverage in a major accident.
My advice to my clients, family and friends is to ensure that your personal insurance policies cover underinsured and uninsured motorists in addition to your umbrella coverage. In the event of an accident, your policy coverage can step in and ensure that you receive proper financial support in your time of need.
