Maternal mortality—and the significant disparity in care for women of color—has been a big topic in the medical field. Recently, Cleveland hosted a Black maternal morality summit, focusing on equity in healthcare.
New developments and discussions
The Clinical Translational Science Collaborative at Case Western Reserve University organized the inaugural Black Maternal Health Equity Summit at Cleveland State University. The summit featured a keynote address by Dr. Deirdre Cooper Owens and provided a platform for local mothers and healthcare professionals to share experiences, research, policy updates, challenges and opportunities related to Black maternal health.
Overall, the attendees expressed optimism about addressing disparities in Black maternal health, with hopes of combating the Black mortality crisis. One attendee, Cameron Johnson, highlighted the importance of equal treatment for Black women in healthcare settings, emphasizing the need for attentive care and advocacy.
Several mothers shared personal stories illustrating the challenges they faced during childbirth, including instances of being dismissed or ignored by healthcare providers. Tiffany James recounted her experiences, underscoring the significance of community support and organizations like Birthing Beautiful Communities and Pregnant with Possibilities in navigating pregnancy and childbirth as a Black woman. Da’na M. Langford, co-founder of the Village of Healing Center, emphasized the role of grassroots organizations in providing essential care and support to pregnant women, particularly within communities disproportionately affected by maternal health disparities. The summit aimed to spotlight such efforts and foster collaboration to address the Black maternal health crisis, recognizing the need for systemic change and equitable healthcare practices.
Maternal mortality and medical malpractice
The narratives shared by mothers during the summit underscore the critical need for equitable and attentive care during pregnancy and childbirth. In fact, these stories often reveal instances of medical negligence and dismissiveness, which can significantly contribute to adverse outcomes such as maternal mortality.
Medical malpractice during pregnancy and childbirth is a serious issue that can have devastating consequences for both mothers and their babies. When healthcare providers fail to uphold the standard of care, resulting in harm or injury, it constitutes medical malpractice. Instances of misdiagnosis, failure to monitor fetal distress, delays in emergency interventions and inadequate postnatal care are just a few examples of medical errors that can occur during the perinatal period.
