It’s never a good thing when the medications that you rely on to keep you alive are recalled for safety reasons. One such medication, Losartan Potassium Tablets, was recalled due to the fact that several dosages contained a chemical compound called N-Nitroso N-Methyl 4-amino butyric acid. This chemical compound is a known carcinogen.
The affected dosages of Losartan Potassium Tablets included in the recall are 25 milligrams, 50 milligrams, and 100 milligrams, as well as specific repackaged 50 milligram dosages that were distributed to pharmacies in Ohio and the rest of the United States. This medication is prescribed to patients suffering from congestive heart failure and high blood pressure. It was manufactured by Legacy Pharmaceutical Packaging LLC.
Additional Medications Included In the Recall
Losartran is just the tip of the iceberg as far as prescription medication recalls are concerned. Several others, all of which are prescribed to people with high blood pressure and other heart ailments have been recalled in recent months as well. They include Valsartan tablets, a medication that is a combination of Valsartan and Amlodipine, and a combination of Losartan Potassium and Hydrochlorothiazide. All of the recalled medications should not be taken, and patients should contact their doctors right away.
The Consequences of Medication Recalls
When a pharmaceutical company makes a mistake and allows impurities into their medications, there can be drastic health effects. Some people taking the drug might be allergic to the impurity. It might affect the effectiveness of the medication, making it stronger or weaker than it should be. Or, as in the case of Losartran, it could contain a cancer-causing compound. The main affects of tainted medications could show up right away or even months or years down the road. You need to be vigilant and keep an eye on your health, because as these recalls have shown, even the manufacturers of prescription medications cannot be fully trusted.
