Driving in the car is something most of us have to do daily. Driving is ordinary, routine, and mundane. We do it so often that we take for granted the very real risks associated with getting into an automobile.
When you’re rushing to work, or to pick up your kids, you don’t think about the potential dangers. We would make ourselves crazy if we thought about car accident statistics every time we got in the car. However, we feel so comfortable in the car that we allow ourselves to be distracted – distracted by our phones, people, food, other cars, and even the scenery around us.
In order to prevent becoming another statistic, it is important to recognize why car accidents happen. The top five causes of car accidents include:
1. Texting While Driving
I’d be lying if I said I’ve never sent a text while driving, but I don’t anymore. We have all done it, and in the process, we’ve put ourselves and others in danger. Texting and driving is becoming such a hot topic that technology companies are developing software to prevent it. Do yourself a favor, turn your phone off when you get in the car. A text is not worth a life.
2. Drunk Driving
Drunk driving has been, and will continue to be, a leading cause of car accidents in our country. Despite the danger and legal consequences associated with drunk driving, people still have the mentality that they are different, and that the tragedies that happen to others will never happen to them. Drinking and driving is never okay. Before you go out, secure a designated driver or call Uber!
The world is fast-paced and because of that, we’re always late for something. Driving too fast is one of the leading causes of car accidents in the U.S. As much as we like to think speed limits are arbitrary, they are present for one reason and that is to minimize accidents. To avoid becoming the victim of an accident it is important to follow all traffic laws, not just speed limits.
4. Changing the Radio/TV
For as long as most of us can remember, listening to the radio has been synonymous with driving in the car. Even though car companies are trying to eliminate the risks associated with the radio by placing stereo controls on the steering wheel, further technology is creating more of a distraction than radio ever could – today’s cars are being built with TV screens where stereos once existed.
Speeding isn’t the only driving risk associated with our fast-paced world, eating on the go is a major problem. Eating in the car can be incredibly dangerous. Pulling into the drive-through seems so simple and harmless, but eating is one of the most common causes of car accidents.
