Is Visiting Ohio’s Cedar Point Amusement Park Really Worth the Risk?

If there’s one thing many Ohioans look forward to in the Summer months, it’s going to Cedar Point. Known as the roller coaster capital of the world, Cedar Point is home to some of the largest and most terrifying amusement park rides ever created.

What makes amusement parks so popular, is the thrill that comes from riding a roller coaster that travels nearly 100 miles per hour, and reaches heights of over 400 feet. However, this is only thrilling because riders do not anticipate safety issues to arise.

Amusement parks are not regulated as closely as they should be, and may be more dangerous than anyone realizes.

The federal government doesn’t place any regulations on amusement parks or their rides. According to Senator Edward J. Markey from Massachusetts, “A baby stroller is subject to tougher federal regulation than a roller coaster carrying a child in excess of 100 miles per hour.”

In order to generate greater profit, amusement parks such as Cedar Point and Six Flags are compelled to rise the stakes (and thus the risks), to make rides more extreme than ever. The assumption is that all these rides are safe, but the reality is, without proper regulation, there is really no way to be sure.
